Brown Oak is caused by the beefsteak fungus, Fistulina hepatica, when it attacks
European oaks and turns the wood brown. It grows in about 1 out of every
500 Quercus robar and Quercus petraea oak trees in England and France. The
"brown oak" that results from it's growth in oaks has traditionally been
the only sort of oak used in fine European furniture. (Click on photo to enlarge)

Old Growth German Oak - "Quercus petraea"
The great American ecologist and writer Aldo Leopold, writing in the 1920s said that,
"the "Spessart" bears the most magnificent oaks in the world. American cabinetmakers,
when they want the last word in quality use Spessart oak."
We are bringing in very large, old growth, German Oak veneer logs that are from 300 to 400 years old.
These logs are from the "Spessart area, one of the best White oak forests in the world. These are managed forests and a
limited number of trees are cut every year and offered for sale. We rift & quartered them into
lumber. The color is light straw to light tan and clear. Some of these huge logs are up to 40 feet
long with no defects and very tight grain. We cut some 12" to 16" wide, rift lumber from some of
them. Very rare dimensions for sure. The rest were quartered for the figure.
